Analysing Bids in Dialogue Macrogame Theory using Discourse Obligations

چکیده
We focus on a class of utterances that can be analysed as ’explicit game bids’ in Dialogue Macrogame Theory (DMT). We propose an update-semantics analysis that uses discourse obligations to model the observable behaviour of dialogue participants and that is able to generate the intentional structure of interactions assumed in DMT. We also claim that our analysis provides the base for reformulating some key aspects of ILLOCUTIONARY FORCE in terms of BIDDING.

Formalising Hinting in Tutorial Dialogues
The formalisation of the hinting process in Tutorial Dialogues is undertaken in order to simulate the Socratic teaching method. An adaptation of the BE&E annotation scheme for Dialogue Moves, based on the theory of social obligations, is sketched, and a taxonomy of hints and a selection algorithm is suggested based on data from the BE&E corpus. Both the algorithm and the tutor’s reasoning are f...
متن کاملDialogue Macrogame Theory
Dialogue Macrogame Theory is designed to enable analysis of particular natural dialogues. Some dialogues can be analyzed with DMT; some cannot. Where it fits, DMT gives a partial technical characterization of the classes of dialogues represented in the analyses. This paper is focused on presenting the elements of the theory. Other presentations are expected to describe its application and valid...
متن کاملDiscourse Obligations in Dialogue Processing
We show that in modeling social interaction, particularly dialogue, the attitude of obligation can be a useful adjunct to the popularly considered attitudes of belief, goal, and intention and their mutual and shared counterparts. In particular, we show how discourse obligations can be used to account in a natural manner for the connection between a question and its answer in dialogue and how ob...
متن کاملThe obligations and common ground structure of practical dialogues
In this paper a theory of dialogue structure of task oriented conversations and its associated tagging scheme are presented. The theory introduces two linguistic structures supporting the dialogue that, following traditional terminology, we call the obligations and common ground. The theory is illustrated with the detailed analysis of a transaction. We also describe the empirical work supportin...
متن کاملConversational Agency: the Trains-93 Dialogue Manager
Designing an agent to participate in natural conversation requires more than just adapting a standard agent model to perceive and produce language. In particular, the model must be augmented with social attitudes (including mutual belief, shared plans, and obligations) and a notion of discourse context. The dialogue manager of the TRAINS-93 NL conversation system embodies such an augmented theo...
